Linear functions

A seedling is 2 centimeters tall when it is planted. Its height y, in centimeters, x weeks later is given by the equation below. What does the 3 represent?

y = 3x + 2

Trellis: It's the slope, the rate of change. Each time x goes up by 1, y goes up by 3.

Learner: I still don't get it.

Learner: Oh. It goes up 3 every time.
